Fiona Chesterton
Writer, Journalist, broadcaster
My second non-fiction book NOT THE TOKEN WOMAN will be published by Bite-Sized Books in November 2025. It tells the true story of my early experiences working as a TV and Radio journalist at a time when BBC newsrooms were overwhelmingly male-dominated. Sexism was rife.
My memoir follows on from first full-length non-fiction book, SECRETS NEVER TO BE TOLD, which was in part a childhood memoir. This is a very personal investigation into the impact of illegitimacy on the lives of women in my family. Since publication, I give presentations based on the research I did for the book and more widely about turning family history into a compelling narrative for a wide variety of groups. I also continue my professional association with the creative industries via voluntary activities. I was Chair of the Public Art panel in Cambridge until 2023 and continue to serve as a resident on ad hoc community arts projects. In 2020 I contributed essays to a couple of fast turnaround books on the BBC and on Coronavirus in the media (Bite-Sized Books). Previously, I had a long career in television commissioning, production and journalism at the BBC and Channel Four. I worked for many years in News and Current Affairs, where I was a senior Producer and Editor at the BBC, and Deputy Commissioning Editor responsible for Dispatches at C4. I became C4’s first Commissioning Editor for Daytime and then further broadened my work into Education becoming Controller of Adult Learning at the BBC.I was also Director of Television at the media industry skills body, Creative Skillset.
I was elected a Fellow of the Royal Television Society in 2008 for services to broadcasting. I sat for five years on their Education committee awarding bursaries to disadvantaged students and was also on various judging panels for TV awards, including at the MonteCarlo TV Festival and RTS Journalism awards. I have had a wide range of trustee and non-executive roles including as Honorary Secretary and Trustee of the Beds, Cambs and Northants Wildlife Trust. I have also been a Non- exec director of an NHS Trust, Trustee of the National Extension College and the Indie Training Fund and a member of the East of England Committee of the Heritage Lottery Fund.
I am interested in bringing my experience to bear on new projects, in a mentoring or Non-exec capacity.
