The Essential Guide To Managing Public / Private Partnering

Michael Burton and Richard Smith

If you’ve ever been involved (or about to be) in a contract with a government department – THIS IS AN ESSENTIAL GUIDE.

This book is a practical guide showing how the private and public sectors can better understand each other, overcome mistrust, and learn from each other’s organisational cultures, challenging the stereotype that one sector is populated by sharks and the other by dolphins. The authors explain how both sectors can adopt each other’s strengths to build more equal and effective partnerships. The value of knowing and understanding the character type one is involved with is one of the secrets to being truly persuasive”

Michael Burton has spent over 30 years as a commentator, editor and author working for a private company covering the public sector. He is former editor of The MJ (Municipal Journal) the market-leading weekly title for UK local government, a director of its parent publishing company and the author of three books on the public sector and politics.

Richard Smith is a former Professor and Council Corporate Strategic Director – Head of Businesses. He was founder of both Public Sector Plc – a private sector property development group – and the Centre for Partnering, which was a collaboration between six universities, in where he pioneered the idea of “Relationalism” and improving public/private partnering dividends. He strongly advocates the importance of gaining persuasive skills which are reflected in this publication.
