Angela Runciman

Angela E. Runciman is a PhD candidate and adjunct faculty member in the Department of Comparative Literature at Binghamton University (SUNY, USA), where she is preparing to defend her dissertation, “An (Un)historic Becoming: Reading George Eliot’s Middlemarch with Walter Benjamin.” She also holds an MA in English from Binghamton, and a BA in English from Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania. Runciman has taught a variety of literature courses at Binghamton on topics such as Modern women writers, European Modernism, an upper-level seminar on her research on George Eliot, Virginia Woolf, and Walter Benjamin. She is a recipient of the Binghamton University Excellence Awards in Teaching (2016-17), and Service and Outreach (2013-14).

Her recent conference presentations include “Feeling (for) Knowledge: Conjuring the (Un)historic Constellations of St. Theresa and Dorothea in Eliot’s Middlemarch” at the George Eliot Bicentenary Conference in Leicester in July 2019, for which she received a Humphreys Bursary Award; and “Undermining Nationalism and Recovering Marginalized Voices in Woolf’s Mrs Dalloway” at the 29th annual International Conference on Virginia Woolf in June 2019, which is currently under review for publication.  In 2014, Runciman served as selected chair of the British Women Writers Association conference, organizing and hosting the 22nd annual meeting at Binghamton University. She is a member of the Council for European Studies at Columbia University, and a founding member of its European Culture research network; British Women Writers Association Executive Board, International Virginia Woolf Society, and Modern Language Association.
